The chapada covers an area of 65,000 hectares and is located in an area of the upper cerrado which includes various municipalities whitch are
São João d'Aliança
,
Alto Paraíso de Goiás
,
Colinas do Sul
and
Cavalcante
.
It was recognized as a
World Natural Heritage
by
UNESCO
in December 2001.

The waterfall called
Vederas
. It's located near the village of
Cavalcante
The news of the discovery of an immense gold mine on the banks of the river
Lava Pes
, in the mountains of
Cavalhada
attracted many adventurers from distant regions.
This was the beginning of an influx of population, and the name of
Cavalcante
was given in honor of the founder and colonizer who was called Diogo Teles Cavalcante, this in 1740.
